POSTPONED: Film: ‘Contract’ (2010) and Discussion with Filmmaker

March 18, 2020 at 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Sonja Haynes Stone Center will host noted Cape Verdean filmmaker Guenny Pires for a screening and discussion of his film CONTRACT. The documentary discusses the centuries-old system of contract slave labor that exported thousands of Cape Verdeans to the island of Sao Tome to work on plantations.

Pires is a filmmaker, cinematographer, and visual media arts teacher. He is the first native-born Cape Verdean to write, direct, and produce documentary and narrative films about Cape Verde, a small African nation of twelve islands off the coast of Senegal. In 2005, he moved to Los Angeles and founded Txan Film Productions & Visual Arts, a four-member production company. During his visit to the Stone Center, Pires will be researching additional information that will be used in his current work in progress on noted African liberation figure Amilcar Cabral.
