Art  :  Almost Now: Cuban Art, Cinema, and Politics in the 1960s an 1970s

August 29th to December 6th  |  Times vary  |   Ackland Art Museum

On display August 29 through December 6, 2009

Featuring sixteen Cuban cinema posters (and a signed and numbered print of Alberto Korda's iconic photograph of Che Guevara) recently given to the Ackland Art Museum by eminent art historian, collector, and Carolina alumnus David Craven, Almost Now: Cuban Art, Cinema, and Politics in the 1960s and 1970s examines the central role that artists, filmmakers, and film audiences have played in Cuban cultural and political discourse since the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

During the 1960s and 1970s, both printmaking and filmmaking flourished in Cuba, and the cinema poster became the artistic medium of the moment. Some of the most prominent Cuban artists of this time are represented in Almost Now, including Rene Portocarrero, Raul Martinez, and Alfredo Rostgaard.

The posters seen in Almost Now announce films of varied genre and subject, including feature films, shorts, and documentaries about literary, social, and political topics. For example, Cartas del Parque is an adaptation of stories by author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Hasta la Victoria Siempre honors Che Guevara on the occasion of his death, and Por Primera Vez shows audiences in rural communities watching Charlie Chaplin's classic film Modern Times for the first time.

Lecture  :  Legacy of a Champion: Kid Chocolate and Sport as Nationalist Expression in Cuba
November 22nd  |  6:00 PM  |   FedEx Global Education Center, Nelson Mandela Auditorium

The Institute for the Study of the Americas will host a talk by recent UNC history Ph.D. Enver Casimir entitled “Legacy of a Champion: Kid Chocolate and Sport as Nationalist Expression in Cuba.”

Following the talk will be a presentation of the film “Kid Chocolate.” In this documentary, Cuba’s first boxing world champion recounts some of his exploits in the rings of New York City and reflects on his experience as a sporting celebrity during the late 1920s and early 1930s.

From 1929 to 1933 Kid Chocolate was at his peak as a fighter, facing a vast array of top featherweights and lightweights. He fought 8 world champions. He won his first 51 professional fights without loss before coming out on the short end of a split decision to Jackie “Kid” Berg. He won the Jr. Lightweight Title by stopping Lew Feldman in 12 rounds in 1931 and won the NYSAC World Featherweight Title in 1932 by decisioning Fidel LaBarba. Chocolate ranks among the all time greats of boxing history in the featherweight division.

Film  :  South Asia Film Festival: Laagan
December 2nd  |  6:30 PM to 9:00 PM  |   FedEx Global Education Center, Nelson Mandela Auditorium

Lagaan (2001) is a Bollywood feature film based on an original story by Ashutosh Gowariker.  It was produced by Aamir Khan, who also plays the lead role, and stars Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, and Paul Blackthorne in supporting roles.

The film received critical acclaim and awards at various international film festivals, as well as many India film awards.  It also became the third Hindi-language film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Lagaan Synopsis: This is the story about the resilience shown by the Indians when they were under the British Rule. They are already taxed to the bone by the British and their cronies, but when Jack Russell announces that he will double the Lagaan (tax) from all villagers, they decide to oppose it. Leading the villagers is a handsome young man named Bhuvan, who challenges them to a game of cricket, a game that is to be played by veteran British cricket players, versus villagers, including Bhuvan himself, who have never played this game before, and do not even know a bat from a piece of wood. As the challenge is accepted, the interest grows and attracts Indians from all over the region, as well as the British from all over the country - as everyone gathers to see the 'fair play' that the British will display against their counter-parts, who are aided by none other than the sister, Elizabeth, of Captain Russell.

Organized by the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Asian Studies.  The film will play with English subtitles.  The event is free and open to the general public. For more information contact Afroz Taj at taj@email.unc.edu.

Outside Africa, one can also see a parallel as in the case of the Candomble in Salvador, Brazil, and the Vodoun religion practiced in Caribbean countries. This talk is part of the Carolina Seminar in African Ecology and Social Processes. This working group is comprised of Triangle area faculty and graduate students. Each month's meeting is an informal gathering for sharing new research and discussing contemproary issues in Africa. Light dinner is served. Open to all area faculty and graduate students in any discipline.   Free.   Please contact Barbara Anderson at b_anderson@unc.edu for more information.
