Susan Carroll is the managing director of the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center. She has served in this role since 2015, overseeing the center’s daily operations at both universities. Susan is committed to providing exceptional opportunities and support to Rotary Peace Fellows. Furthermore, she actively promotes the Rotary Peace Fellowship to attract outstanding candidates worldwide and supports fellows as they pursue graduate studies in various disciplines at either university. Previously, she served as assistant director (2011-2015) and coordinator (2005-2011).
Before joining the center, Susan dedicated more than 20 years to international humanitarian assistance. She served with the Office of the U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She was the first UN Liaison Officer with the Allied Forces in Incirlik, Turkey, working with military personnel to protect and assist Kurdish refugees.
Susan serves on the advisory board for Carolina’s Conflict Management Initiative and is a member of the Dispute Resolution Committee at Duke. While living abroad, she completed graduate-level coursework at the Institut Universitaire des Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva, Switzerland, and in 2023, she received a certification in immigrant advocacy from Villanova University. She volunteers with the immigrant justice organization VECINA, mainly assisting Afghan asylum seekers. Susan also worked briefly in residential real estate in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and lives in Hillsborough.
