Experts Discuss the Background, Process, and Potential Impact of US-Taliban Negotiations

On November 12, 2019, the Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies (CMEIS) hosted a panel discussion on United States-Taliban negotiations. CMEIS invited three individuals to speak on the background of the negotiations, how they were conducted, and their potential impact. UNC Global’s Fall 2019 Passport Drive Sees Record Numbers

There was a record turnout for UNC Global’s fall passport drive—448 attendees submitted passport applications, an increase from 411 in fall 2018 attendees. The drive took place on November 13 and 14 on the fourth floor of the FedEx Global Education Center. Honors in London, Winston House Begin Anniversary Celebrations

But for the past 30 years, Honors Carolina has made that distance seem smaller by connecting Carolina’s best and brightest students to the international academic community. Dhiren and Kailas Thakker Support Global Pharmacy Scholarships with $500,000 Endowment

Four years ago, Dhiren Thakker, and his wife, Kailas Thakker, made a gift to initiate the Global Pharmacy Scholarships (GPS) Program at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in an effort to improve health around the world and inform pharmacy practice at home. As part of their ongoing commitment to the program, the couple has pledged additional funds to increase the Dhiren and Kailas Thakker Endowment to $500,000. This increased endowment will support up to 20 students per year traveling to over 10 countries for pharmacy educational experiences. UNC Ranks 17th Among U.S. Universities for Study Abroad in 2019 ‘Open Doors’ Report

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks 17th among U.S. higher education institutions for the number of students earning credit for study abroad for the second year in a row, according to the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) 2019 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. This ranking reflects credit-bearing activity conducted by students from all schools across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, including short-term study abroad programs and medical and pharmaceutical rotations pursued abroad. US News and World Report Ranks Carolina 33rd Among World’s Top Research Universities

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is ranked 33rd among the world’s top 1,500 universities, according to the sixth annual U.S. News and World Report Best Global Universities rankings, a shift from 34th last year. Among U.S. research universities included on the list, UNC-Chapel Hill placed 22nd overall and 7th among public campuses. The UNC Modern Indian Studies Initiative hosted its inaugural conference, “Driving Innovation: Technology and India’s Rise as a Global Power,” on October 10-11, 2019. UNC-Chapel Hill Hosts Delegation from Universidad San Francisco de Quito

On October 24 and 25, 2019, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted two representatives from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) in Ecuador to explore possibilities for academic and research collaborations and student engagement: Diego Quiroga, vice president for research, and Mateo Sáenz Hinojosa, director of international relations.
