Charlie Winter, ‘The The Islamic State’s Utopia: A Visual Tour of the Caliphate’
November 28, 2018 at 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Charlie Winter will give the lecture, “The Islamic State’s Utopia: A Visual Tour of the Caliphate,” from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28 in Room 104 of Peabody Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Winter is a senior research fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalism (ICSR) at King’s College London. Alongside his work at ICSR, which is supported by Facebook as part of the Online Civil Courage Initiative, Winter is also a doctoral candidate in war studies at King’s College London, an associate fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism in The Hague and an associate of the Imperial War Museum Institute in London.
The lecture will be based on Winter’s research into how and why the Islamic State uses social media-based information and disinformation campaigns in its global war. The presentation will be comprised of a visual tour of the “caliphate” utopia, shining a light on how the group was able to attract tens of thousands of fighters to Iraq and Syria in 2014 and 2015, and why it provoked the international interventions that led to its material collapse in 2018.
King’s College London has been a strategic partner of UNC-Chapel Hill since 2005. The partnership has allowed collaborations in diverse fields across both universities, resulting in joint activity in teaching, research and other initiatives.
This event is organized by the Department of Communications and the Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense.
