Devyn Benson, ‘Black Consciousness in Cuba: The Untold Revolution’

November 5, 2018 at 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

The Institute for the Study of the Americas “On the Matter of Race and Race Relations in Cuba” Speakers Series for the fall semester 2018 is dedicated to the examination of the complexities of race relations in Cuba, with particular attention to the ways that the Cuban revolution, with its doctrinal commitment to social justice and racial equality, addressed–or failed to address–inequities with deep historical antecedents. Speakers offer uniquely critical perspectives from which to assess the state of race relations in Cuba based on extensive research in and travel to Cuba. This event is co-sponsored by The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History.

Devyn Spence Benson is a historian of 19th-20th century Latin America with a focus on race and revolution in Cuba. Her research and teaching interests sit at the intersection of Latin American history and Africana Studies and she has worked throughout her career to merge the two fields by focusing on Afro-Latin American and Caribbean history, politics and culture.00
