Marimjazzia Album Release Party
October 29, 2019 at 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Head to the Stone Center as we celebrate the release of Ruta Panoramica by Latin jazz ensemble Marimjazzia. The group, formed by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill associate professor of music Juan Alamo, combines Afro-Caribbean rhythms, particularly those from Puerto Rico, with the melodic elements of jazz.
The system of roads known as the Ruta Panorámica traverses from west to east through Puerto Rico’s central mountain ranges. Named after the enchanted island’s first elected governor, Luis Muñoz Marin, the Ruta functions as a kind of corridor, running through the heart of the island and connecting its travelers to the people and local cultures of Puerto Rico. Juan Álamo’s CD Ruta Panoramica is a sonic realization of the Ruta, a realization in music wherein its rhythms, harmonies, and melodies move simultaneously in multi-layers and multi-directions.
This event is free and open to the public. The evening will include a performance by Marimjazzia as well as a reception. CDs will be available for purchase. Visit the UNC Transportation and Parking website for more info on parking availability.
This event was rescheduled from September 5 due to inclement weather.
