Off-Record Communications: Reading Three-Body in China and the US

January 13, 2022 at 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

The conventional wisdom of Western media continues to characterize communication in China as censored, sanitized, and, with the hyper-technologized dominance in facial recognition technologies, “techno-authoritarian.” This talk presents evidence that, although ubiquitous, off-record communications are often not the results of censorship. Stories about Chinese communications are incomplete because they are skewed towards “verifiable” data. What are our alternatives, and why don’t we see them? This talk introduces the notion of off-record communication. The study is two-fold: it shows what media theory can do for literary and cultural studies; and what the Eurocentric media studies can learn from Chinese literature.

Xuenan Cao will speak on “Off-Record Communications: Reading Three-Body in China and the U.S.” in a series organized by UNC’s Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.

This event is free and open to the public, and will be held in person (barring any changes in campus regulations).
