Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, clawhammer banjo player Abigail Washburn (Béla Fleck duo, Sparrow Quartet, Uncle Earl) is known for creating inventive cross-cultural takes on folk and old-time music. She’s appeared on the Carolina Performing Arts stage a number of times, as a member of the Silk Road Ensemble and otherwise.
She returns to Chapel Hill with Wu Fei, Beijing-born singer, classically trained composer of music that merges the classical avant-garde with the Chinese folk tradition, and master of the guzheng, a 2,000-year-old, 21-string Chinese zither. This enchanting duo is a musical resolution to specific and differing issues about home. For Abigail, it means creating brave, intimate music with a sister from across the sea. For Fei, it is an opportunity to assimilate Chinese opera, classical and folk music into improvised song forms.
