Romanian Film Screening: Moromeții I (The Moromete Family)
April 7, 2020 at 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Moromeții I (The Moromete Family) is an iconic Romanian movie depicting in neo-realist fashion the dynamics of rural life in a traditional Romanian community before the Second World War and the subsequent advent of communism. As a precursor of the Romanian New Wave, this movie is a must-see for anybody interested in film studies, Eastern Europe, gender studies, Cold War rhetoric, censorship, and more. Due to its success, in 2018 Stere Gulea, the movie’s director, released a much-awaited sequel, Moromeții II. Both films are based on books by Marin Preda, one of the most remarkable Romanian authors.
This screening is organized by Letitia Guran, Romanian instructor in the UNC department of romance studies.
