‘Rosas danst Rosas’ Performances in Wilson Library and Davis Library

October 3, 2019 at 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

On October 3, 2019, Carolina Performing Arts and its partners invite the Carolina and Chapel Hill community to the Re:Rosas Library Takeover at Wilson Library and Davis Library on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Dancers will perform the “chair dance” from Rosas danst Rosas in phases across the libraries. Join us for this “choreographic intervention” where we incorporate dance and its history into this unique activation of campus spaces.

This event is made possible by the partnership of the University Libraries at UNC-Chapel Hill, Carolina dance students and locally-based dancers.

Background information:
On October 9 and 10, 2019, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Belgian dance company Rosas will perform their canonical feminist dance Rosas danst Rosas as part of the Carolina Performing Arts season. Since its premiere in 1983, Rosas danst Rosas has become a canonical dance work, even making headlines in 2011 when Beyoncé generously incorporated its choreography into a music video. Rather than enter into a legal battle, De Keersmaeker responded by developing Re:Rosas, a web-based project that offers instruction on the piece’s choreography, with a public invitation for new interpretations of it, a tactic that has spawned hundreds of user-uploaded videos from around the world.
