CANCELED: Ambassador Ram Aviram and Aaron Salzberg, ‘The Jordan and the Nile: Can We Avoid the Water Wars?’

March 19, 2020 at 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

In 1985, then Secretary General of the United Nations Boutros Boutros Ghali said “The next war in the Middle East will be fought over water, not politics.” That future may be today. Increasing demands, pollution, climate change, and upstream development are now threatening key rivers across the Middle East and North Africa. Two rivers lay at the intersection of water, peace, and politics – the Jordan and the Nile.

Hear from two experts, their personal stories and experiences to deescalate tensions over water in two of the most conflict-prone regions of the world. Speakers include Ambassador Ram Aviram- lead political consultant for rehabilitation of the Lower Jordan River and former Chief of staff of H.E. Shimon Peres, and Dr. Aaron Salzberg, director of the UNC Water Institute and former special coordinator for Water, U.S. Department of State. The talk will be moderated by Dr. Erika Weinthal- professor of Environmental Policy, Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University.
