On Thursday, May 28, the Sonja Haynes Stone Center will host Cape Verdean filmmaker and Stone Center Visiting Artist Guenny Pires for a virtual screening and Q&A session for the North Carolina premiere of his award-winning film CONTRACT. The virtual screening will take place at 12pm via Vimeo with a follow-up Zoom question and answer at 2pm EST with the director! You will receive a link to view the film on Vimeo. CONTRACT is a film about the centuries-old system of contract slave labor that exported thousands of Cape Verdeans to the island of Sao Tome to work on plantations.

Guenny Pires is a filmmaker, cinematographer, and visual media arts teacher. He is the first native-born Cape Verdean to write, direct, and produce documentary and narrative films about Cape Verde, a small African nation of twelve islands off the coast of Senegal. In 2005, he moved to Los Angeles and founded Txan Film Productions & Visual Arts, a four-member production company.

Pires holds a Masters in Audiovisual and Communication Arts from Porto University in Portugal; a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from the Lusophone University in Portugal; an A.A. in Cinema Production from Los Angeles City College; and an M.A. in Fine Arts in Film, Television, and Photography from Mount Saint Mary’s University. He currently works for Los Angeles Valley College as a filmmaker, cinematographer, and video editor. He also teaches Television Production at Los Angeles City College and is the executive director of the Txan Cine-Fest.

The Stone Center’s Visiting Artist Program brings outstanding individuals and groups to campus to exhibit, perform, and interact with the campus and communities in the surrounding region. All Visiting Artists agree to present to groups and/or offer one-on-one consultation or instruction for students, staff and faculty. Visiting artists often visit classes when requested to talk about their work. The Visiting Artists Fund is supported entirely by the Stone Center’s many generous donors. During this period of COVID –19 restrictions, we are pleased to adjust our programming to bring you this special screening.

RSVP is required; register for the film screening.
