2019-2020 Carolina Global Photography Competition

The 20th annual Carolina Global Photography Competition will be accepting submissions beginning June 1, 2019. This amateur competition, which is open to students, alumni, faculty and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, showcases Carolina’s global activity, educational opportunities, research and service work. The competition will run through September 15, 2019. ‘The Art of Resistance: An Exhibition Featuring the Work of Ramón Nsé Esono Ebalé’

The Art of Resistance, an exhibition featuring the work of world-renowned graphic novelist and political cartoonist Ramón Nsé Esono Ebalé, will be on display August 19 to December 13, 2019 at the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Esono Ebalé gained notoriety for criticizing the long-ruling, oppressive government of his native Equatorial Guinea. Yoga in the Galleries

Yoga in the Galleries provides an opportunity to practice a series of gentle yoga poses inspired by the art in the Ackland Art Museum gallery. The hour-long session is taught by registered yoga teacher Joanne Marshall. Beginners are welcome. Yoga mats are provided. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to stretch. Cost is free for Ackland members; $5 per session for all others. RSVP on the Ackland’s website.

‘DO or DIE: Affect, Ritual, Resistance,’ Exhibition

This fall, the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History will host a solo exhibition entitled DO or DIE: Affect, Ritual, Resistance. This show, on loan from the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, features the work of award-winning visual artist, Fahamu Pecou. ‘DO or DIE: Affect, Ritual, Resistance,’ Exhibition Opening Reception

Join the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for the opening of DO or DIE: Affect, Ritual, Resistance. This multimedia exhibition by award-winning artist Fahamu Pecou seeks to elevate and recontextualize Black life and death by reframing our view. Pecou integrates West African spiritual traditions with African cultural retentions in hip-hop and the philosophy of “Negritude” to explore Black existence.
