Photography from around the world will be on display at the Carolina Global Photography Exhibition, which features work by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill alumni, faculty, staff and students. Entry is free and open to the public. The exhibition opened Jan. 11 and will run through July 21, 2017, at the FedEx Global Education Center.

This past summer, doctoral student John Paul Balmonte worked on a once-in-a-lifetime research cruise traveling from New Zealand to Alaska. Balmonte conducted research focusing on the activities of microbial communities that initiate the breakdown of organic matter at different depths and locations.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University sponsored the second annual Learning through Languages High School Research Symposium, with 85 students from 9 North Carolina high schools participating. The program, held Dec. 8, 2016, was an opportunity for North Carolina world language students to showcase their language, research and presentation skills.

The week was held Nov. 14-18, 2016 on the theme “Transnational Science Fictions: Black German Culture and the Cultural Exchange between Germany and the U.S.” and was sponsored by the Center for European Studies, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures, Institute for African American Research and Department of Dramatic Art at UNC, as well as the German Embassy.

When Nijal Morgan ’20 applied to go to on a fall break Social Justice Experience trip to Trinidad, he had never been out of the country.
