Conference Focuses on Complexities in Latin America, Feb. 22-23 2019

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host the inaugural North Carolina Conference on Latin American Studies (NC/CLAS) on Feb. 22-23, 2019. The event is co-sponsored by the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean studies at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University and by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
The two-day conference feature films, panels, roundtable discussions and workshops that touch on culture, education, environment, governance, health, identity and politics in Latin America. The theme of the conference is “Understanding Complexity in Latin America.”
NC/CLAS will feature a keynote address by Edwin Castellanos, dean of research at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala and co-director of the Centro de Estudios Ambientales y de Biodiversidad at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. The address, titled “Is There a Climate Change Factor in the Recent Migration Events from the Northern Triangle in Central America?”, will be held Friday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium at the FedEx Global Education Center.
“NC/CLAS provides a venue for scholars and specialists of Latin America and Latino/a studies from across the state of North Carolina, representing the social sciences and humanities, health care, and environmental studies, to share knowledge and foster collaborative state-wide networks on matters of shared interests related to current scholarship, national security, and issues of K-12 pedagogy,” says Louis A. Pérez Jr., J. Carlyle Sitterson Professor of History and director of the Institute for the Study of the Americas at UNC-Chapel Hill. “The conference offers faculty, staff, students and community from across the state the opportunity to come together to exchange new knowledge and develop new insights about the complexities of Latin America, past and present.”
