A 2016 Passport to GO! Fellowship recipient meets with Katie Costanza, program manager for the Center for Global Initiatives (CGI). CGI administers this fellowship.

Take advantage of an easy on-campus opportunity to apply for or renew your U.S. passport at the FedEx Global Education Center from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Nov. 14 and 15 during UNC Global’s annual Passport Drive. Students, faculty, staff and their families are invited to attend.

During the 2016 Passport Drive, over 370 students, faculty, staff and their family members submitted passport applications.

Officials from the U.S. Department of State will be on campus both days to accept new passport applications and renewal applications. Application forms will be available at the event.

“The Passport Drive has proven to be a great way to support the Carolina and local community in their international endeavors,” said Katie Bowler Young, director of Global Relations. “I’m also grateful to the Center for Global Initiatives for Passport to Go!, an affiliated initiative that helps financially eligible students obtain their first passport.”

The Center for Global Initiatives’ Passport to GO! (P2GO!) fellowships are granted to eligible first-year and transfer students. This year, 103 students were awarded funding for their first U.S. passports. Slightly more than 60% of the cohort consists of students whose immediate family has never traveled internationally. Many of the awardees are first generation college students, and more than 70% of the group are students of color.

CGI is spearheading the P2GO! program as a larger campus effort to offer and promote greater access to international education. The fellowship should be offered again next year with applications due early in the fall semester.

Though applicants are encouraged to get their photos taken at the UNC One Card Office in advance to minimize wait time, photos can also be taken at the event for $7. Please note that as of Nov. 1, 2016, Passport Services will no longer accept passport photos in which applicants are wearing eyeglasses. Applicants must remove their glasses for the photo. Please visit the U.S. State Department website for additional information on photo requirements.

The Passport Drive will be held in room 4003 of the FedEx Global Education Center, 301 Pittsboro St. No public parking is available during this event. Learn more about required materials and the fees for first-time applications and renewals on the UNC Global website.
