Havens Named to Sigma Theta Tau International Researcher Hall of Fame

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor Donna Havens will be inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International‘s Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame at the International Nursing Research Conference in Dublin, Ireland this July.
The International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame was founded in 2010 to recognize nurse researchers who have achieved significant and sustained broad national and international recognition for their work, and whose research has impacted the nursing profession and people it serves.
“[Dr. Havens] has developed an acclaimed foundation for evidence-based nursing leadership, and I and many fellow nurse executives have for years turned to [her] research to guide decisions about structuring nursing practice environments in hospital settings,” said Patricia Reid Ponte, senior vice president and chief nursing officer of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in her nomination of Dr. Havens. “…Havens is an internationally-known scholar whose noteworthy research program has illuminated our understanding of the importance of designing excellent nursing practice environments to impact outcomes.”
Linda Aiken, Claire M. Fagin leadership Professor of Nursing and Director at the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, added, “Dr. Haven’s unique background in practice, administration, research, academe and academic administration serves to enrich her research and its translation into practice. Her work has exceptional “real world” appeal for nurse leaders and practicing nurses. In particular, her work has significantly contributed to the evidence base for nurse executives, the architects of the practice environment in clinical settings. Her sustained and constantly evolving work has formed an important foundation for other scientists in the field.”

Criteria for the Hall of Fame is:
- Integrated scholarship in the researcher’s area of specialty or interprofessional practice and a significant and sustained level of achievement in nursing research, which has had national and/or international impact on the profession, patients, families, community or policy.
- A distinguished record of first-authored, co-authored, publications and presentations in nursing and non-nursing peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstration of external funding, university funding, or unique organizational support with justified unique context of funding.
- Evidence of mentorship of novice researchers with demonstrated scholarly outputs. Evidence includes, but is not limited to, the number of mentees, who can be master’s students, Ph.D students, novices and clinical researchers.
- The researcher’s program of research has a measurable impact on policy and/or has promoted quality and value to service delivery. In addition, the research should demonstrate translation of evidence to practice.
Havens joins UNC School of Nursing faculty Dean Nena Peragallo Montano, Associate Dean for Research Ruth Anderson and Professors Emeritae Margarete Sandalowski and Merle Mishel as members of the Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.
