The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted a delegation from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom March 1, 2018.
As Essex is on track to increase its student body by 50 percent since 2012 and is also beginning a new strategic planning period, the delegation visited large U.S. institutions like UNC-Chapel Hill to investigate how to improve the efficiency of finance and administrative areas to support a larger student and staff body while maintaining quality customer service.
The Essex delegation was led by Bryn Morris, registrar and secretary, who serves as the university’s chief operating officer. Other visitors included Sonia Virdee, director of strategic planning and change; Vanessa Cuthill, director of research and enterprise; and Susie Morgan, director of human resources.
The delegation met with their counterparts at Carolina and discussed how UNC-Chapel Hill organizes and operates its respective units to best serve the diverse needs of a substantial campus community, especially through the use of technology. Participating UNC-Chapel Hill units included the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, ITS, human resources, finance and operations, and the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, among others.
“Sharing best practices with institutions across the world allows us to learn from each other and strengthen our linkages,” said Ron Strauss, Carolina’s executive vice provost and chief international officer.
UNC-Chapel Hill and Essex have supported an undergraduate student exchange since 2005.
