UNC-Chapel Hill Hosts Delegation from University of Gothenburg

On Feb. 15, 2019, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted a delegation of faculty and scholars from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden to explore areas for partnership development. The delegation was led by Eva Wiberg, vice-chancellor and head of the university, and included staff from Gothenburg’s International Center, as well as deans and faculty from Gothenburg’s Faculties of Arts; Business, Economics and Law; Sciences; Social Sciences; and Sahlgrenska Academy (Faculty of Medicine, Odontology and Health Care Sciences). The president of the University of Gothenburg Student Unions also joined the delegation to meet with her Carolina counterparts.
UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Gothenburg have an existing partnership primarily within Carolina’s College of Arts and Sciences. The two universities recently launched an undergraduate exchange program, with the first students participating this fall. In 2018, Gothenburg also became a partner in the Trans-Atlantic Master’s (TAM) program, housed within the UNC-Chapel Hill’s Center for European Studies. Students in TAM’s European Governance track can spend their second year at Gothenburg through a double-degree option. The delegation was able to interact with TAM students who will study at Gothenburg next year and students from Gothenburg who are participating in the TAM program.
“The University of Gothenburg and GU’s Center for European Studies are important partners for the UNC-Chapel Hill Center for European Studies,” said Katie Lindner, interim director of the Carolina center. “We know our TAM students will have a wonderful experience in Gothenburg and hope this successful partnership can be expanded to other units throughout Carolina’s campus.”
The delegation was welcomed by UNC-Chapel Hill Interim Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and also met with Carolina faculty and staff to discuss possible new areas for academic and research collaborations and student engagement. Participating UNC-Chapel Hill units included the College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School, Kenan-Flagler Business School, School of Dentistry, School of Government, School of Law, School of Media and Journalism, School of Medicine, School of Social Work and UNC Global.
