The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine’s William A. Fischer II and David A. Wohl are part of an international group of authors who have contributed to a recent Perspective piece published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The piece argues that patients with Ebola virus disease in countries with limited resources should be treated according to the same standard of care that is used in countries where resources are more readily available.

It was published in the April 11, 2019 issue of NEJM.

Fischer, assistant professor of medicine in the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine, has responded to outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in both West Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo with the World Health Organization. Together, Fischer and Wohl, professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases, have collaborated with healthcare workers in Liberia, including Jerry Brown and Jefferson Sibley, to learn about this and other high consequence pathogens to inform prevention and treatment strategies. Fischer and Wohl are both members of the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID).
