Photography from winners of the 18th annual Carolina Global Photography Competition will be on display at the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from Jan. 10 through July 20, 2018.

The Carolina Global Photography Competition is open to Carolina alumni, faculty, staff and students, and the exhibition features winning photographs and other select images showcasing the range of global activity, educational opportunities, research and service work at UNC.

Competition judges selected winning photographs from more than 800 submissions for first, second and third overall grand prizes as well as thematic spotlights. Judges awarded thematic spotlights to photos that incorporated particular themes, including food for all; global perspectives within the U.S.; learning moment; movement; nature’s beauty; a new take on an old landmark and school spirit.

Additionally, each area studies center and unit housed in the FedEx Global Education Center selected photos that reflected their mission, vision, academic focus or world area. These images were given regional spotlight acknowledgements.

Hiba Alzouby ’21 PharmD was awarded first place for her photo “Home We’ll Go.” Alzouby took the photograph while volunteering for International Relief and Development, Inc., at Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan.

“My experience in Zaatari opened my eyes to the educational crisis and the dire lack of opportunities for students and young people who have ambitions of becoming productive members of society and rebuilding their home country one day,” she said. “I am elated that this photograph will be on display and hope that it will bring awareness to the circumstances plaguing victims of war.”

Chancellor Carol L. Folt selected three photos she found globally relevant and distinctive. The Chancellor’s Choice images are also on display.

“The competition honors individuals for their artistic achievements and the exhibition allows the Carolina community to share their experiences while introducing others to new places and ideas,” said Ingrid Smith, manager of global events and exhibitions for UNC Global. Staff from the Center for Global Initiatives, Global Relations and the Study Abroad Office comprise the annual photography competition and exhibition planning committee, with Smith serving as coordinator.

Entry to the exhibition is free and open to the public. Parking is available after 5:00 p.m. in the McCauley Deck underneath the FedEx Global Education Center, located at 301 Pittsboro St., Chapel Hill.
