Carolina Ranks 54th in 2020 ‘Times Higher Education’ World University Rankings

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks 54th among the world’s top 1,396 research universities, according to the London-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The 2020 ranking, released Sept. 11, is based on 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture a full range of university activities. Indicators cover teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.
Among U.S. research universities, UNC-Chapel Hill placed 27th overall and 10th among public campuses. Last year, the University ranked 56th in the world and 28th in the United States.
The University of Oxford is ranked first in the world, followed by the University of Cambridge, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“I am delighted to see Carolina climbing in the World University Rankings. External rankings such as these indicate the strength of Carolina’s research and scholarship,” said Barbara J. Stephenson, vice provost for global affairs and a former U.S. ambassador. “Our highest ranked pillar, placing us at 48th, was for citations of our faculty members’ publications. I extend my congratulations to our faculty and see this ranking as an indicator of how the world turns to Carolina’s expertise on the world’s great challenges.”
In addition, UNC-Chapel Hill appeared on several subject-specific ranking lists published by Times Higher Education. It placed 30th in the world and 21st in the U.S. in psychology; 32nd in the world and 15th in the U.S. in health affairs; 32nd in the world and 20th in the U.S. in education; 33rd in the world and 19th in the U.S. in social sciences; and 54th in the world and 22nd in the U.S. in life sciences.
