UNC Awards $978,122 in Study Abroad Support to 212 Students

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has provided $978,122 in scholarships, fellowships and program support to 212 undergraduate students pursuing study abroad programs in spring, summer and fall 2018, and year-long programs during the 2018-19 academic year. Funded by private gifts to the College of Arts & Sciences, the awards enable students to study outside the U.S. for a semester, summer or year.
Thirty-six percent of Carolina undergraduates study outside of the United States before they graduate, one of the highest study abroad rates among U.S. public universities. The Study Abroad Office in the College offers more than 400 programs in 70 countries.
“International education has a meaningful influence on the academic and professional paths that students take,” said Jason Kinnear, interim associate dean for study abroad. “With the generous support of alumni and friends, we are able to increase access to global opportunities for all of our students at Carolina.”
Descriptions of the study abroad scholarships awarded from the College and a list of this year’s recipients are included below. North Carolina resident awardees are listed alphabetically by county; out-of-state and international students are listed alphabetically by state and country. Also included are their study abroad plans and names of the scholarships they received. Students listed without majors have not yet declared majors.
Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Latin America
Alumna Leslie Benning of New York City and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The fund supports study abroad in Latin America.
Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Spain/Iberian Peninsula
Alumna Leslie Benning of New York City and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003 to support semester or year-long study abroad programs in Spain or Portugal.
The Marietta and Hyman Bielsky Honors Study Abroad Scholarship Fund
This scholarship covers expenses for participation in the Honors Semester in London program for one Johnston Scholar each year.
Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award
Alumnus Michael Boyatt of Durham established this award in 1996 with his son, alumnus Matthew, also of Durham. This merit award funds study abroad by undergraduates majoring in global studies or history.
John Lucier Brantley Honors Fund
The John Lucier Brantley Honors Fund supports students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs with a preference for North Carolina residents with financial need studying at UNC’s Winston House in London.
Julia Preston Brumley Travel Scholarship in American Studies
This scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the memory of alumna Julia Preston Brumley, an American studies major. The scholarship provides support to undergraduates with a major or minor in American studies to participate in semester or summer study abroad programs.
Jan and Steve Capps Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarship
established this scholarship in 2015 to provide need-based awards to students for semester or year-long study abroad programs. Preference is given to students from Dare, Hertford, Martin, Nash and Northampton counties, but all North Carolina students are eligible.
Carolina Malawi Award
Participants in the first UNC Summer Study Abroad Program in Malawi were supported by shared investment from UNC-Chapel Hill’s North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies.
Carolina Center for Jewish Studies
Several funds created by alumni and friends of the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies support a range of scholarship in the field of Jewish studies. Funds that have recently supported undergraduate students participating in study abroad or fieldwork related to Jewish studies include the Howard R. Levine Student Excellence Fund in Jewish Studies, the Jerry and Huddy Cohen Excellence Fund, the Harvey Colchamiro Endowment Fund, the Fund for Jewish Studies and a fund supported by anonymous donors.
Crawford Family Honors Carolina Scholarship
The Crawford Family Honors Carolina Scholarship supports students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs and Burch Field Research Seminars.
Cumpston Fellows First-Generation Students Initiative
Alumnus William Russell Cumpston of Monte Sereno, California, established this fund to enable first-generation college students to participate in study abroad, research or a credit-bearing internship in order to deepen their level of engagement with Carolina and help ensure their success in graduating. 2018 recipients were selected from Carolina’s Lookout Scholars cohort to participate in a summer program, “Navigating Education in Borderlands,” that explored the concepts of borders and borderlands with experiences in Arizona and Mexico.
Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
The scholarship covers participation in the Honors Semester in London program. Recipients are selected for scholastic merit, intellectual engagement and financial need.
Alva Ebersole Award
The award supports students with financial need in the UNC in Sevilla program, established by the Department of Romance Studies.
Stuart Eizenstat Study Abroad Fund in Holocaust Studies
This fund, given by Stuart Eizenstat ’64, provides scholarships for undergraduate student participation in a study abroad experience in the area of Holocaust Studies.
D. and M. Fitz Excellence Award
The D. and M. Fitz Excellence Award supports students studying off-campus with Honors Carolina.
The Will Froelich Honors Fellowships
These fellowships are awarded to prospective Honors Carolina students who share Will Froelich’s adventuresome spirit, lively intellect, interest in civic engagement and compassionate humanity. The fellowships can be used to study abroad, participate in a program or internship related to public policy, pursue civic engagement or work with a faculty mentor on independent Honors research.
Fry Study Abroad Scholarship
This need-based scholarship is intended for students wishing to study abroad in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Lee Stevens Gravely of Rocky Mount and her four children, all of whom are UNC alumni: Frances Gravely and Susan Gravely of Chapel Hill, Steve Gravely of Pittsboro and Page Gravely of Middleburg, Virginia. The award honors Lee Gravely’s late husband, alumnus Lloyd Lee Gravely, a World War II veteran and president of a family-owned export-import company, China American Tobacco Co. The fund provides annual study abroad scholarships, with a preference for North Carolinians.
Anthony and Hope Harrington Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumnus and former U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Anthony Harrington of Easton, Maryland, created this award in 2004 with his wife, Hope. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The Harringtons established the scholarship to honor former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, who taught at UNC in 1974 and 1975 and who received an honorary degree from UNC in 2001. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.
Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship Program
This scholarship was established in 2004 by gifts from Harris Teeter, the Charlotte-based supermarket chain, and the Dickson Foundation, Inc. Prior to merging with the Kroger Co. in 2014, Harris Teeter was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ruddick Corp., whose former chair was the late Alan Dickson of Charlotte, also a Dickson Foundation trustee. The fund provides scholarships for students from North Carolina, with a preference for Harris Teeter associates and their children.
Haywood Family Study Abroad Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by alumni Emmett and Hubert Haywood of Raleigh in 2007 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in summer, semester or year-long study abroad programs.
Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Award Fund
Alumnus Leonard Herring of North Wilkesboro and his wife, Rozelia, established this scholarship in 2005 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in semester or year-long study abroad programs.
Marleigh Desmond Hicks Study Abroad Scholarship
This fund was established in 2017 by alumnus Michael-Bryant Hicks of Saint Louis, Missouri, in honor of his son to provide support for undergraduate students involved with the Center for Student Success and Academic Counseling to study abroad in summer, semester or year-long programs.
Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund
Established in 2012, the Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund provides full funding for a five-week program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This scholarship is annually awarded to two students who have not previously traveled to Asia and are currently in the Carolina Covenant Scholars program. The Carolina Covenant Scholars program provides eligible high-performing, low-income students the opportunity to graduate debt-free.
Honors International Experience Fund and Honors Study Abroad Scholarship Fund
These funds support scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.
Suzanne Hynes Memorial Travel Award
This award was created in 1986 by former UNC Board of Trustees member and alumnus James Hynes of Charlotte and his wife, Peggy, in memory of their daughter, Suzanne. The fund supports travel for study abroad.
Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2001 by John and Jane Jacques of Nashville, Tennessee, whose daughter Lindsay, a UNC alumna, participated in the Honors Summer in London and Oxford program. The fund provides scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.
Joe Henry and Jenny C. Jenkins Study Abroad Fund
Joe Henry Jenkins and his late wife Jenny, longtime residents of Dare County and eastern North Carolina, established this fund in 2004 to support study abroad for undergraduates from eastern North Carolina, with a preference for students from Bertie, Dare and Hertford counties.
Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarships
Carolina alumnae Mary Anne Johnson Dickson and Neal Johnson of Charlotte established the fund supporting these awards in 2002 to honor their late father, a banker and community leader in Elkin. The fund offers need- and merit-based scholarships to North Carolina undergraduates, with a preference for students from Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.
Gold Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
The Gold Honors Study Abroad Scholarship was established by James Gold of New York City. The funds from this scholarship support need-based awards for participation in the Burch Field Research Seminar on Jewish Life and the Holocaust in Poland.
Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship Internship Fund
This fund annually provides support to students in the entrepreneurship minor and can be used for research, travel, internships and start-up funding.
Sarah Quinn Laney Memorial Fund
This fund supports scholarships for students participating in Honors-administered study abroad programs. Scholarship recipients must be residents of North Carolina. Preference is given to students who plan to study in France. If no students meet that qualification, the scholarship is awarded to female students studying in Europe.
Grey Lineweaver Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumna Grey Lineweaver of Greensboro established this scholarship in 2005, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched her gift. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.
Lan Ma and Gang Pei Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2018 by Dr. Gang Pei and Dr. Lan Ma of Shanghai, China, to provide scholarships to students participating in semester-long study abroad programs in mainland China.
Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education
Established in 2000, this fund provides scholarships for undergraduate students participating in Honors Study Abroad, field research or other Honors-administered off-campus academic programs.
The Brian and Susan Mashburn Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumni Brian and Susan Mashburn of West Bloomfield, Michigan, established the fund supporting these need-based awards in 2013.
Charles A. McLendon Sr. Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumnus Charles A. McLendon Jr. of Charleston, South Carolina, created the fund supporting this scholarship in 2004 to honor his late father of Greensboro, a Burlington Industries executive who traveled extensively overseas. The fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and academic merit.
Mealy Family Study Abroad Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by alumna Posey Mealy and her husband, Mark, of Charlotte in 2010 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in summer, semester or year-long study abroad programs.
G. Timothy and Jessica Hope Pate Environmental Science Field Program Scholarships
The G. Timothy and Jessica Hope Pate Environmental Science Field Program Scholarships (The Pate Scholars) are made possible by Timothy Pate ’80 of Trent Woods and his daughter Jessica Pate ’07 of Raleigh. The scholarship fund was inspired by Jessica’s wonderful experience at Carolina and the role played by the Institute for the Environment’s field sites. The scholarship is need-based, with merit as a secondary consideration.
Phillips Ambassadors
The Phillips Ambassadors program was established in 2005 with a generous gift from alumnus Earl N. “Phil” Phillips Jr. of Chapel Hill, a business executive and former U.S. Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean, and his family. This scholarship, given annually to 25 to 50 students, combines a financial award for a study abroad program in Asia with an academic course that puts the experience in a greater global context.
Greer and Bryan Pope Scholarship
Established in 2016 by alumni Greer and Bryan Pope of Atlanta, Georgia, this scholarship provides awards to students with demonstrated financial need who are participating in summer, semester or year-long study abroad programs.
Richard S. Reynolds Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
This fund provides merit study abroad scholarships for two to three Honors Carolina students each year. The scholarships provide a means of further stimulating the intellectual experience of Honors Carolina students through international travel.
Laura Richards Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumna Laura Richards of Carrollton, Georgia, established this fund in 1999 to provide scholarships for global studies majors.
Frances and E.T. Rollins Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship
Frances Rollins of Durham established this fund in 2008 in honor of her late husband, a UNC graduate and a former owner, board chairman and publisher of The Herald-Sun in Durham. The fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and academic merit.
Elizabeth Malone Roughton Study Abroad Scholarship Fund
Jane Ellison of Greensboro established this scholarship in 2011 to honor her mother, Elizabeth Malone Roughton, who received her undergraduate degree from Carolina in 1939. The merit award funds a study abroad program in Dublin with a dramatic arts internship component.
Professor Joel J. Schwartz 1995 London Honors Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2013 by the 1995 London Honors Program alumni to honor their faculty director, Professor Joel Schwartz. The fund provides scholarships for students who would not otherwise be able to spend the semester in London.
The Helen Elizabeth Dayvault Sechler Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumnus John Jackson Sechler of Cornwall, England, established the fund supporting these awards in 2013 to honor his mother. The fund offers need-based scholarships for semester or year-long exchange programs in England, with preference for students who plan to enroll in classes related to their major or who will pursue an internship or formal service-learning course while in England.
Horace J. Shumate Memorial Scholarship
Carol Shumate of Chapel Hill established the fund supporting this award in 2001 in honor of her late father, who worked in the foreign operations division of Loffland Brothers Drilling Co. for 24 years. A contract negotiator, Shumate traveled to remote locations around the world. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad and targets students who wish to pursue new academic or personal interests through international experiences.
Study Abroad Awards
The Study Abroad Office awards scholarships to some students from an award fund supported by donor gifts. The awards are based primarily, but not exclusively, on financial need.
Townsend Family Strategic Initiative
This fund was established by alumni John and Marree Townsend of Greenwich, Connecticut, as part of a $50 million gift to kick off For All Kind: The Campaign for Carolina. The initiative allows the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences to invest in innovative programming, and Dean Kevin Guskiewicz selected study abroad awards as one of his priorities.
The J. Stanley Tucker London Honors Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who enroll in Honors Study Abroad programs based in London.
Grace Alley Walsh Travel Fund
Grace Alley Walsh ’55 of New York City established this award to support the international educational travel expenses of full-time students. Preference is given to residents of Alamance County, North Carolina, and White County, Georgia, as well as North Carolina residents with financial need.
William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies
This fund provides fellowships for students to develop language skills and gain practical, independent work experience in China. Recipients spend the spring semester in Beijing for intensive language study and coursework on contemporary China, then spend the summer interning in Beijing or Shanghai.
NORTH CAROLINA RECIPIENTS
Alamance
Caleb Graham of Mebane will study at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, this fall. A double major in mathematical decision science and exercise and sport science, Graham received the Grace Alley Walsh Travel Award.
Marina Greenfeld of Graham participated in the Honors London and Oxford programs in England this summer. A double major in English and comparative literature and Germanic and Slavic languages and literatures, Greenfeld received an award from the Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education.
Emily Koester of Burlington studied at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen in Germany this spring. An environmental studies major, Koester received the Grace Alley Walsh Travel Award.
Ziola Kowzan of Graham will study at Universität Mannheim in Germany this fall. An American studies major, Kowzan received the Julia Preston Brumley Travel Scholarship in American Studies.
Randi Thompson of Mebane participated in the UNC Summer in Malawi program in Lilongwe and Zomba. A public policy major, Thompson received the Carolina Malawi Award.
Kaitlyn Turner of Mebane studied at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, this spring. A global studies major, Turner was selected as a Phillips Ambassador.

Kyle Krajewski of Washington studied at George Mason University’s geology field camp in Camerino, Italy, this summer. A geological sciences major, Krajewski received the Suzanne Hynes Memorial Travel Award.
Erin Lewis of Washington will participate in the UNC Honors in Cape Town program in South Africa this fall. A double major in political science and human development and family studies, Lewis received the Will Froelich Honors Fellowship and the Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.
Brunswick
Jaycee Reilly of Leland participated in the UNC in Sevilla program in Spain this spring. A double major in exercise and sport science and Romance languages, Reilly received the Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarship.

Sequoia Wright of Swannanoa will study at International Christian University in Mitaka City, Japan, during the 2018-2019 academic year. A double major in anthropology and Asian studies, Wright received the Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Award.

Maximilian Conley of Morganton studied at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, this spring. A double major in history and philosophy, Conley was selected as a Phillips Ambassador and received a Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award.
Jordan Jenkins of Morganton studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland this spring. A double major in history and political science, Jenkins received the Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship and a Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award.
Alessandro Uribe-Rheinbolt of Morganton will participate in the Honors Semester in London program (internship track) in England this fall. A political science major, Uribe-Rheinbolt received the Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.

Hailey Humphrey of Morehead City participated in the Honors Semester in London program (internship track) in England this spring. Humphrey received the Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship and an award from the Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education.
Catawba
Darian Abernathy of Hickory participated in the Navigating Education in Borderlands program with experiences in Arizona and Mexico this summer. A political science major, Abernathy received support from the Cumpston Fellows First-Generation Students Initiative.

Harrison Cho of New Bern participated in the Kenan-Flagler Business School’s international internship program in Hong Kong this summer. A double major in economics and business administration, Cho was selected as a Phillips Ambassador.
Lorena Dujmusic of New Bern participated in Freie Universität Berlin’s European Studies program in Germany this spring. A biology major, Dujmusic received the Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship.
Shawna Milam of New Bern participated in the UNC Archaeological Excavation in Israel program in Huqoq this summer. A classics major, Milam received funding from the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies.
