UNC Global hosted its fifth annual International Welcome Social, an afternoon of music and ice cream, at the FedEx Global Education Center on August 22.

Several hundred new international students and scholars and returning and incoming study abroad exchange students attended.

Chancellor Carol L. Folt provided welcome remarks, encouraging students to take advantage of all the opportunities UNC has to offer. Ronald Strauss, chief international officer and executive vice provost, and Bradley Opere ’17, UNC student body president and international student, also spoke at the event.

“One of the reasons I love this annual welcome back gathering is it gives us a chance to meet so many global students for the first time. I truly hope to see you often and to get to know you personally as you each make this campus a special and deeply global place,” Strauss said.

Approximately 1,300 UNC students study abroad each year, and Carolina welcomes more than 3,000 international students, scholars and exchange students every year.

The event was sponsored by the Center for Global Initiatives, Global Relations, International Student and Scholar Services and the Study Abroad Office. The Blue Star Travelers provided music and Ben & Jerry’s catered.
