Institute for the Study of the Americas

The Institute for the Study of the Americas (ISA) builds on a long-standing and distinguished tradition of scholarly interest in the diverse regions that make up Latin America, including Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, as well as the Latin American and Caribbean diaspora. It sponsors a wide variety of activities for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and supports teaching, research and public outreach. ISA is part of the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, a collaboration between Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The consortium has been designated as a National Resource Center and Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship granting center by the U.S. Department of Education.

Featured Program

For nearly three decades, the Yucatec Maya Summer Institute has trained scholars in the modern Yucatec Maya language. The institute offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced language instruction in an intensive language environment combined with a field-based, experiential programming to provide students with a solid linguistic and cultural foundation. Students work with Maya scholars and communities through a combination of classroom activities and community engagement.
