Boren Awards for International Study [graduate, undergraduate] Administered by the Institute of International Education, Boren Awards are funded by the National Security Education Program within the Department of Defense. Boren Scholarships offer support for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Boren Fellowships enable U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their education through specialization in area study, language study or increased language proficiency. Center for Global Initiatives [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] The Center for Global Initiatives supports faculty research and curriculum development as well as student language training, field research and professional development. CES Graduate Student Research Travel Awards [graduate] The Center for European Studies offers funding to graduate students to present papers in the U.S. or Europe on some aspect of the European Union. Awards for travel in the U.S. are $750 and for travel to Europe, $1,500. CGI International Internship Awards [graduate, undergraduate] The Center for Global Initiatives provides grants ranging from $900 to $3,000 for returning undergraduate and Masters-level students who have secured internationally-focused summer internships. CGI Pre-Dissertation Travel Awards [graduate] Center for Global Initiatives, provides grants to put doctoral students in the field to do a preliminary exploration of potential research materials in preparation for writing a proposal and a subsequent dissertation. Awards range from $2,000 to $4,000. CGI Student Research Circles [graduate, undergraduate] In order to enrich the flow of research ideas among students, the Center for Global Initiatives offers grants of $2,000 to interdisciplinary student research circles to support speaker series, brown bags, workshops, publications, film screenings and service-learning projects for an academic year. C.V. Starr International Scholarships [graduate, undergraduate] The C.V. Starr International Scholarships were established with a gift from the Starr Foundation and are administered by the Center for Global Initatives. Scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 support students with financial need to undertake independent, internationally-oriented experiences. Undergraduate students must be Pell-eligible, and graduate students must NOT be U.S. citizens.. ESRC/SSRC Collaborative Visiting Fellowship [faculty/staff, graduate] The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) offer fellowships to enable exchange visits between researchers in the United Kingdom and the Americas in order to foster communication, cooperation and joint research. Fellowships support scholars from the Americas to visit ESRC-supported scholars in the U.K., and ESRC-supported scholars from the U.K. to visit collaborators in the Americas. Applicants and their collaborators should have received a Ph.D. in the social sciences by the time the proposed fellowship will start. European Union Center of Excellence Summer Research Fellowships [graduate] Offered through the Center for European Studies, two awards will be made to graduate students to conduct pre-dissertation research on the E.U. in Europe. Awards are in the amount of Euro 4,000. Family Health International - UNC Public Health Fellowship Program [graduate] This fellowship program provides students with the opportunity to work with FHI's world-renowned researchers in global health topics such as HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases and reproductive, maternal and adolescent health. As a part-time research/program assistant, students will have hands-on learning experiences that will expand their research skills as well as make important contributions to specific research studies. Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships [graduate] Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, FLAS Fellowships are awarded by UNC's Area Study Centers in a competitive process for graduate students to pursue the study of less commonly taught languages and area studies coursework. FLAS fellowships include a stipend of $15,000 (academic year) or $2,500 (summer) and payment of tuition and fees. The Area Studies Centers administer FLAS fellowships for relevant languages/research areas, while the Center for Global Initiatives administers awards for Kiswahili, Lingala, Arabic and languages not covered by the other Centers. Fulbright U.S. Student Program [graduate, undergraduate] This program, administered by the Institute of International Education, is designed to give B.S./B.A. graduates, masters and doctoral candidates and young professionals and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. Grants last nine to twelve months and are available in 140 countries. UNC students must apply for through the Center for Global Initiatives. Fulbright-Hays Dissertation Research Abroad Program [graduate] Also administered by IIE, this grant is available to Ph.D. candidates who wish to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies, excluding Western Europe, lasting six to 12 months. The grant provides travel expenses, stipend, tuition, books, research related expenses and health insurance. UNC students must apply through the Center for Global Initiatives. Funding for U.S. Study Online [graduate, undergraduate] A resource for international students, this is an extensive database of scholarships, fellowships and grants maintained by the Institute of International Education. Funding for U.S. Study includes all types of funding programs for all levels of post-secondary study across the full range of academic areas. Graduate School Awards [graduate] The Graduate School offers a number of travel, research and dissertation fellowships and funding opportunities. Internal Funding Opportunities at Carolina [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] This searchable database is the primary funding information resource for research and scholarly activities conducted by UNC staff, students and faculty. International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] IREX sponsors a broad range of fellowship opportunities for masters, pre-doctoral and postdoctoral research, as well as for senior scholars, professionals and policymakers. The Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship [graduate, undergraduate] The Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship was established in 1998 by Sangam, UNC’s South Asian awareness student group. The Fellowship awards two students each year up to $3,000 to execute a project of their own design that benefits South Asians in some way, whether it is through direct service or increasing awareness of South Asian culture and issues. Matching Funds [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] The Center for Global Initiatives offers funding for faculty and student projects that deepen knowledge and understanding of our complex world. Projects must have financial support from another UNC unit, and matching funds generally do not exceed $500. The Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East & Muslim Civilizations also offers matching grants up to $200. Mellon Conference Travel Awards [graduate] The Institute for the Study of the Americas offers modest travel awards to assist with domestic and international travel expenses of UNC Latin Americanist graduate students who are presenting papers at conferences. Awards are typically $200-$500 each. Mellon Dissertation Fellowship [graduate] The Mellon Dissertation Fellowship, offered by the Institute for the Study of the Americas, recognizes graduate students working on dissertation research in Latin America or the Caribbean. The fellowship will support travel and living expenses for dissertation research and/or writing by outstanding doctoral candidates. The minimum amount of each award is $1,000. National Science Foundation [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] The NSF’s Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) supports programs to expand and enhance leading-edge international collaborative research and education opportunities for U.S. scientists and engineers, especially at the early career stage. Office of Distinguished Scholarships [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] The Office of Distinguished Scholarships serves as an information clearinghouse for prestigious scholarship opportunities, advises students on their applications and facilitates contacts with faculty mentors. Opportunities include Rhodes, Luce, Churchill, Marshall and Mitchell Scholarships. Office of Global Health Funding Opportunities [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] The Office of Global Health provides limited funding for graduate and undergraduate international/global health internships and practica, including the Malawi Summer Institute, and specific fellowships and internships. OGH also maintains a list of resources for on-campus and off-campus funding and internship opportunities. P.E.O. International [graduate, undergraduate] P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund was established to provide scholarships for international female students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada. Peacock REACH Fellowships [graduate] This fellowship, offered through the Center for Global Initiatives, offers a $30,000 stipend to Ph.D. candidates over two consecutive years. Recipients conduct international dissertation field research in the first year and then teach a course directly related to that research in the second year. The fellowship is named in honor of UNC anthropology professor James L. Peacock for his distinguished and longstanding commitment to global education. Rotary World Peace Scholarships [graduate] The Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution offer individuals committed to peace and cooperation the opportunity to pursue a two-year master’s-level degree in international studies, peace studies and conflict resolution at one of the six Rotary Centers around the world. Salber-Phillips Award [graduate] The Salber-Phillips Award in the School of Medicine recognizes medical students who carry out the ideals of Dr. Eva J. Salber and Dr. Harry Phillips through community-oriented projects that improve the health or well-being of elderly people. Awards are granted up to $1,000. Sponsored Programs Information Network [faculty/staff, graduate, undergraduate] Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN), from InfoEd International, is a large multidisciplinary funding database containing over 11,000 funding sources from federal and private agencies. Tinker Pre-dissertation Field Research Grants [graduate] Administered by the Institute for the Study of the Americas, the Pre-dissertation Field Research Travel Grant supports preliminary research by graduate students working in Latin America and the Caribbean. The fellowship may cover international travel, limited living expenses and field research expenses. Typically, grants range from $500-$1,500 each. UNC Entrepreneurial Public Service Fellowships [graduate, undergraduate] Through support from the Donald P. Kanak family, the Center for Public Service awards summer fellowships of up to $3,000 each to develop and implement social entrepreneurship projects that employ innovative, sustainable approaches to complex social needs anywhere in the world.
