Peter Newman, communications officer for King’s Worldwide at King’s College London, visited the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill the week of Sept. 12 to learn more about international communication strategies at UNC.

Newman visited Chapel Hill as part of King’s Staff International Exchange Program, making him the fourth staff member from King’s to visit UNC through the program. During his visit, he met with staff from UNC Global and the Study Abroad Office to discuss the UNC-King’s student exchange program and discuss strategies to improve promotion of the partnership. He also met with staff in the Office of Communication and Public Affairs, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Center for European Studies and multiple university departments to learn more about communications at Carolina.

“My week at Chapel Hill was a fantastic experience that really helped me understand how one of King’s most valued partners communicates with a wide range of audiences across the university,” said Newman. “I’ve gained some great ideas and insights that I will take back to London to improve the way we communicate and to promote UNC-King’s collaborations even more widely.”

Newman was also able to meet with King’s students currently on exchange at UNC to get their perspective on student life at UNC and ideas on how to encourage more students to participate in the exchange.

“We were excited to welcome Peter to UNC,” said Melissa McMurray, international liaison officer. “King’s College London is one of our most important partners, and hosting staff exchanges allows us to learn best-practices from one another.”

UNC’s collaboration with King’s College London, a research-led public university in the heart of London founded in 1828, exemplifies a commitment to building robust and multi-level global partnerships. In 2006, UNC and King’s College London established the UNC-King’s Strategic Alliance, initiated between UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences and King’s School of Arts and Humanities and School of Social Science and Public Policy. The alliance has expanded to become one of the most ambitious partnerships between U.S. and U.K. universities, including longstanding and emerging joint activity in teaching, research and other initiatives in diverse fields across both universities.
