Colonial Shadows: The Life and Afterlife of Cecil John Rhodes as a Commemorative Statue with Sandra Klopper

Sandra Klopper is a Professor Emerita of Art History and former Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Cape Town. In her paper, she discusses, the symbolic importance the statue of Rhodes played in fuelling and focusing debates related to historical injustices at UCT, which culminated in demands across different campuses in South Africa, the U.K. and elsewhere for a radical de-racialization and decolonization of all universities and their Eurocentric curricula.
