Virtual: Faculty Workshop on COIL: Connecting Carolina Classrooms with the World

The Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs is hosting a workshop for faculty interested in participating in the Connecting Carolina Classrooms with the World initiative to incorporate Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) activities into their courses. The workshop is from 3:45-5 p.m. on Monday, October 5 via Zoom.

This workshop will include:

 +  An introduction to COIL, a flexible pedagogical approach that allows instructors to partner together to develop collaborative courses or course units to meet original learning objectives, even across different disciplines

 +  Breakout discussions

 +  Program development resources and information on available funding for UNC faculty and graduate students. (Awards deadline, October 15)

The featured speaker is Diane Ceo-DiFrancesco, faculty director of the Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning and associate professor in the department of classics and modern languages at Xavier University. Ceo-DiFrancesco is a leader in COIL development.

UNC faculty are welcome to participate in the workshop. Faculty can receive related curriculum development awards for both undergraduate and graduate level courses.

Faculty who are interesting in teaching a COIL course and who need support identifying a partner are eligible to join and can work with the Global Relations team to seek a potential partner.

Connecting Carolina Classrooms with the World: COIL Integrated Courses

Connecting Carolina Classrooms with the World was launched in May 2020 by the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs in order to grow virtual exchanges and introduce global education programming that is inclusive by design.

COIL activities support regular course objectives while also enabling students to examine topics from varied cultural and societal perspectives. Examples of activities include shared readings, small group discussions and group projects. Student collaboration may be synchronous or asynchronous, as long as the technology used to connect students supports the goals for student learning. The first cohort of Carolina faculty participating in the pilot for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 courses are teaching courses in the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Education, and Kenan-Flagler Business School; they are partnering with across eight countries and ten partner universities.
