David Ngendo Tshimba, ‘The Logic of the Republic under Siege: Political Violence in the Rwenzori Borderlands on the Morrow of Independence’

David Ngendo Tshimba is an MISR PhD Fellow from Makerere University. He writes that Africanist scholarship, from the dawn of post-independence era, has grappled with the theme of (political) violence, and more particularly the possibility of gaining a fuller understanding of how violence, especially when on a large scale, (re)shapes state-society relations. This chapter—part of a larger doctoral study which historically inquires into violence in the borderlands of Democratic Republic of the Congo’s and Uganda’s Rwenzori region—casts a critical historical gaze at the Rwenzururu Secessionist Movement (RSM) under the leadership of Isaya Mukirane (1962-4) in view of new archival evidence and ethnographic fieldwork. This talk is part of the Jama series sponsored by the Carolina Seminar in African Ecology and Social Processes.
