Journey Into Asia: disORIENT

February 23, 2019 at 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Every year the Asian-American Students Association (AASA) hosts the Journey Into Asia (JIA), the largest cultural showcase on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus that represents the diversity and culture of the Asian-American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

JIA provides a platform and outlet for AAPI students to express their identities through diverse, cultural performances. This year’s theme disORIENT derives from Edward Said’s scholarly concept of ‘orientalism’. Published in 1978, Said’s Orientalism is a critique of the West’s patronizing historical, cultural and political perceptions of the East. With disORIENT, the 2019 JIA challenges the misrepresentation of the so-called “orient,” and provides a platform for members of the AAPI community to disorient misconceptions about their cultural heritage.

The event will feature ten performances brought to you by student organizations from both on and off campus that range from dance, a cappella, soloists and more.
