Diplomatic Discussion: What is Environmental Diplomacy?

February 27 at 5:30 PM

What is environmental diplomacy? What roles do USAID, the State Department and U.S. embassies play in addressing climate change and helping countries shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy? What can we learn from the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) in Indonesia about a way forward to sustainability?

Join the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs and the American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD) for the latest Diplomatic Discussion — the annual Joseph J. Sisco Memorial Forum — on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 5:30 p.m. in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium.

Vice Provost for Global Affairs Barbara Stephenson will moderate a panel of experts, including:

  • Alonzo L. Fulgham, former acting administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
  • Anthony “Bud” Rock, former acting assistant secretary of state for oceans, environment, science, technology and health
  • Robert O. Blake, Jr., former U.S. ambassador to Indonesia (2013-2016), and concurrently, Sri Lanka and Maldives (2006-2009); former senior advisor to Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.

AAD President Ronald E. Neumann will introduce the panel discussion. The audience will be invited to participate in a Q&A after the panel discussion.

Pizza and CLE credit will be available! Plan to join? Let us know!

Diplomatic Discussions bring foreign affairs practitioners to Carolina to give students a firsthand look at the skills needed to find global solutions to global challenges. Diplomatic Discussions are part of the multifaceted Diplomacy Initiative at UNC-Chapel Hill.
