Virtual: ‘Introduction to Malawi and Chichewa: Interactive Workshop on Malawian Culture and Chichewa Language’

Join the UNC African Studies Center and the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases for a two-part workshop on March 20 and March 27 at 9:30 a.m. These workshops will provide a brief overview of the social, cultural and political context of Malawi with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity in health services for UNC-Chapel Hill students, staff and faculty planning research, service or internships in Malawi. Using a mixture of panel discussions and group breakout sessions, participants will explore social and behavioral, practices and norms in Malawi. 

Participants will also receive:

  • Introductory tips to Chichewa greetings, linguistics and elementary language construction tools
  • Soft copies of workshop material including practical language tips on health and medical interview vocabulary
  • UberEats lunch vouchers

Attendance at both sessions is strongly recommended.  Priority will be given to UNC students with planned research, service or learning programs in Malawi and researchers working in Chewa-speaking countries (Malawi, Zambia, etc.).
