On Monday, August 19, UNC Global held its eighth annual International Welcome Social, hosting new international students and scholars, as well as returning and incoming study abroad students at the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Faculty and staff from across campus helped welcome international students and scholars to Carolina and returning study abroad students back home. Several hundred attendees enjoyed ice cream catered by Ben & Jerry’s, and activities such a photobooth and lawn games.

Ashton Martin ’20, UNC-Chapel Hill student body president, opened the event, and spoke about her first experience outside of the United States, which occurred through a UNC-Chapel Hill study abroad program. Martin encouraged students to become active participants in Carolina’s student life and government.

Interim Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz provided welcome remarks, reinforcing to international and returning study abroad students how excited the University is to have them on campus and urging them to make the most out of their time in Chapel Hill. Raymond Farrow, associate provost for global affairs, also offered remarks, noting the value of international students and scholars’ perspectives and experiences at Carolina.

Last year, approximately 1,700 UNC-Chapel Hill students studied abroad, and Carolina welcomes more than 800 international students starting this fall.

The event was sponsored by UNC Global, the Center for Global Initiatives, Global Relations, International Student and Scholar Services and the Study Abroad Office.
