10 UNC Students Awarded Fulbrights for Global Research and Teaching

Ten students and recent graduates from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants. The grants are for self-designed research and study projects or to teach English abroad during the 2016-2017 academic year. The students receive funding for travel, health insurance and a monthly stipend to cover living expenses during the 9 to 12 month grant period. Parr Receives Two Awards to Research Malaria Parasite That Avoids Rapid Test Detection

Jonathan Parr, an infectious diseases fellow, recently secured two funding sources to further his research into how a malaria parasite in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is avoiding rapid test detection. Analyses of samples collected during the 2013 Demographic and Health Survey in the DRC identified two geographic clusters with a high number of cases of malaria in children with a gene deletion that allowed the parasite to go undetected in first-line testing. UNC Hosts Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar

On Oct. 25, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted participants in the Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar (IEAS), a two-week program that enables college and university administrators from India to come to the United States and explore best practices in U.S. higher education. Dental Students Treat Mexican Children

In 1996, Angie Rhodes spent her second summer of dental school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill providing health care and education to children living in an orphanage in Miacatlán, Mexico, as part of a program called the UNC Mexico Project. This summer her lifelong patient Roxie Braxton, now a third year dental student at UNC, went on the same trip. Number of Surgeons in Malawi Increases

By formal training, Anthony Charles is a trauma surgeon. By experience, he’s a diplomat. Charles leads the Malawian Surgical Initiative, a partnership between the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi, and the Malawi College of Medicine. On Dec. 5, 2015, the first class of surgeons graduated from the five-year surgical training program. On that day, the number of trained surgeons in a country of 15 million people grew by six – to a total of 20. Native American Law Students Association Helps Storm Victims

After Hurricane Matthew, Chelsea Barnes, a second-year law student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill took a break from hitting the books to hit the road. Barnes drove to Robeson County, North Carolina, to volunteer at a distribution point to help storm victims in the Lumbee tribe. Barnes organized a supply drive at UNC School of Law and brought nonperishable food, cleaning supplies, household items for tribe members to a drop-off point in Raleigh.
