Diplomatic Discussion with Jarmo Sareva

April 3 at 5:30 PM

Headshot of Finnish Consul General Jarmo Sareva

What makes Finland the happiest country on earth? Quality-of-life indicators, such as peace, education, life expectancy and more overwhelming position Finland as a global leader in public health and social well-being. Yet after nearly 75 years of neutrality, Finland joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) last April.

Join Finnish Consul General Jarmo Sareva for the latest Diplomatic Discussion on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium as he presents: “From Neutrality to Alliance: Finland One Year After NATO.”

Sareva will discuss Finland’s decision to join NATO, he will argue the transatlantic alliance’s relevance to global security and examine Sweden’s recent decision to join. Sareva will share his insights into Finnish society and politics, too — including the quality-of-life indicators Finland is famous for — particularly as they pertain to the current political and social landscape. After brief remarks, Sareva will take questions from the audience.

CLE credit and pizza will be available to those who attend. Plan to join? Let us know!

This Diplomatic Discussion is part of a series of events taking place the same week in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki and the Finnish Consulate in New York. This event is also co-sponsored by the Center for European Studies.

The Diplomatic Discussions series through UNC-Chapel Hill’s Diplomacy Initiative brings top foreign affairs practitioners from the U.S. and around the world to Carolina to give public talks and classroom discussions on current global issues.
