Exchange and Sponsored Programs

Enabling educational and cultural exchange programs for students, faculty and professionals from across the globe.

Exchange and Sponsored Programs (ESP) are externally funded, customizable, training sessions that strengthen global partnerships and build connections between the University of North Carolina and international organizations. Drawing on the expertise of university faculty members, students, staff, and associates from a wide range of disciplines, ESP assists in bringing international partners to campus and sending university members abroad. ESP offers two main types of programs – custom and grant-funded.

  • ESP works directly with partners to design academic, training and cultural exchange programs that cover a wide variety of topics and themes.
  • Programs involve UNC faculty and students, as well as professional and government experts.
  • Program details (excursions, presentations, etc.) are tailored to the specific and individual needs of each partner organization.
  • Programs can include collaboration with or visits to other area universities and government organizations.
  • ESP works with global partners to identify and apply for opportunities funded by U.S. and international governmental funding agencies and private foundations.
  • ESP collaborates on grant writing and program conception as well as administrative and logistical support.
  • ESP connects departments, professors and student groups with international partners interested in collaborating on particular programs.
  • ESP coordinates with UNC departments and professors to identify initiatives and apply for opportunities that facilitate international exchange.
  • ESP assists with program conception as well as administrative and logistical support for short-term exchange programs.
  • ESP connects departments, professors and student groups with international partners interested in partnering on particular programs.
  • ESP offers cross-cultural training and resources to faculty, staff, and students to enhance their global competency and facilitate successful international engagements.
  •

Types of programs include conferences, workshops, training sessions, research collaboration and student and professor exchanges. Programs are primarily non-credit, with the possibility of certificates or badges being issued to participants. Co-organizing or co-teaching for credit programs is a possibility.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs prioritizes proposals and requests for programs that focus on strong cooperation with on-campus professors, offices, centers, departments, or schools but may also pursue programs if they further the university’s strategic plan and/or could lead to other initiatives. ESP programs often involve coordination with other North Carolina universities, government institutions and private businesses.

These exchanges and events spark new research collaborations, help students and faculty gain global perspectives, cultivate a global mindset on campus and in the surrounding community, and allow the university to share expertise with global partners.
