Carolina Shares Entrepreneurial Teaching and Innovation with Japanese Universities

Research administrators and faculty from four Japanese universities visited UNC-Chapel Hill last month to learn how Carolina teaches and supports entrepreneurship and innovation. The March 9-10 program engaged more than 150 students, 35 faculty and staff, and eight local government and business officials.  Carolina’s Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs (OVPGA) and Nagoya University organized the delegation, which included representatives from Fujita Health University, Meijo University and Aichi University of the Arts. Tar Heels Experience the World of Diplomacy in DC

During the Diplomacy Initiative’s first-ever Washington Week, UNC-Chapel Hill students explored careers in international affairs and networked with alumni in our nation’s capital. Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Nearly 20 years ago, the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center, jointly hosted by Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill, began selecting and training fellows from around the world to become skilled peacebuilders. One of seven Rotary Peace Center partner universities worldwide, the Center has produced 168 alumni from 64 countries to date.  Each year, the two universities welcome 10 new fellows—five on each campus—for two years of graduate study in programs related to peacemaking, international development, public health, global studies and related fields. Lynn Blanchard Leads Civic Education Workshop in the Philippines

Throughout Lynn Blanchard’s more than 20 years at UNC-Chapel Hill, she has connected people across campus and the state of North Carolina for civic good. Tatiana Farmer ’20 Named 2023 Charles B. Rangel Fellow

Tatiana Farmer ’20 has been selected as a 2023 fellow for the prestigious Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship Program.   Farmer, who graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with bachelor’s degrees in global studies and psychology with a minor in Japanese, will begin her multi-year fellowship this summer as an intern in Washington, D.C. working with members of Congress on international issues.   The Rangel program of the U.S. Department of State aims to increase diversity among U.S. foreign service officers by providing professional support for historically underrepresented minority groups pursuing this career path. For Gabriel Bernardo da Silva, opportunities to serve feel almost limitless. He is driven by a passion for human and international rights and international law. The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who already has earned multiple degrees, including in social science, political science and law, has followed those interests to Chapel Hill, where he is currently a fellow at the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center. Tar Heels Build Language Confidence with Virtual Reality

Virtual reality headsets are most closely connected to computer science, but they are a key ingredient in Teaching Assistant Professor Caroline Sibley’s Advanced Arabic class. Though they were physically half a world apart, Tar Heels in Sibley’s class used Google Cardboard VR devices to explore a virtual world with students in Morocco and Algeria in real-time. Carolina Wins Grant for Undergraduate Climate Change Research in Ecuador

UNC-Chapel Hill has been selected to receive a grant from the 100,000 Strong in the Americas Fund as part of the 2022 U.S.-Andean Innovation Fund Grant Competition co-sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. With this funding, students at UNC-Chapel Hill and Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) will conduct climate change research over the course of a year. UNC-Chapel Hill Is a Top Producer of Fulbright US Students

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has named UNC-Chapel Hill a Top-Producing Institution for Fulbright U.S. Students. This recognition is given to the U.S. colleges and universities with the highest number of applicants selected for the 2022-23 Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Carolina is a long-time top producer of Fulbrights. In the 2022-23 cycle, 16 Tar Heels were selected for the award. Recent graduates and current graduate students are pursuing year-long graduate studies, research or English teaching in one of more than 160 countries. Annual Carolina Global Photography Exhibition Returns to FedEx Global Education Center

An exhibition showcasing finalists from the 2022-23 Carolina Global Photography Competition is now on display in the FedEx Global Education Center for the spring semester. With images that represent 28 countries, the exhibition reflects the Carolina community’s deep engagement with partners and communities around the world. The exhibition is made up of photos by undergraduate students, who make up three-quarters of the exhibit, as well as graduate students, staff and alumni.
