UNC-Chapel Hill Hosts Africa Week, November 4-18

The African Studies Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host Africa Week from Nov. 4 -18, 2019. Spread across two weeks, programming will include an art exhibition, film screenings, musical performances, lectures and a panel discussion. Activities are meant to inform and educate the Carolina community about the world region. For thousands of years, the northern Andes Mountains have acted as a carbon sink, preserving organic matter as thick soil. As the planet warms, what will happen to all that carbon? This past summer, Carolina undergraduates traveled to Ecuador to take a closer look. Moss-covered molehills pepper the landscape, each a different shade of autumn. Some are mustard yellow, others evergreen. NIH Awards Grant to Painschab to Improve Multicentric Castleman Disease Treatment in Malawi

The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center has awarded Dr. Matthew Painschab a five-year International Research Scientist Development Award to lead research into improving treatment for multicentric Castleman disease in Malawi. Working through the University of North Carolina Project-Malawi, a collaboration between UNC-Chapel Hill and the Malawi Ministry of Health, Painschab will lead a phase II clinical study for people in Malawi with multicentric Castleman disease (MCD). This disease is more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa because of a higher prevalence of infections with two viruses that can cause it to develop–Kaposi sarcoma herpes virus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). “We … Read more


Bringing the World to North Carolina Classrooms

After a 10-day trip to the Dominican Republic in 2017, elementary school principal Chasity Dolan flew home to Concord, North Carolina, with a new vision for her school. Many of her students’ parents spoke only English at home, while several others spoke only Spanish. Dolan wondered if she could help her students become biliterate by having their parents learn from each other. NC Poet Laureate and Award-Winning Ceramic Artist Celebrate Collaborative Project and 100 Years of ‘The Second Coming’ by Yeats

North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green and award-winning ceramic artist Judith Ernst spoke about their collaborative art piece, Flowing Beneath the Center, at an opening reception on Oct. 9, 2019, in the Florence and James Peacock Atrium of the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Flowing Beneath the Center is a ceramic piece with words inscribed onto its exterior. The installation was inspired by W.B.
