Riveros-Iregui Receives a Fulbright Scholar Award

Diego Riveros-Iregui has been awarded a 2022-2023 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Ecuador to investigate the coupling of greenhouse gas emissions, hydrologic dynamics, and the ecology of tropical alpine environments of the Northern Andes. The award will allow Riveros-Iregui to spend time at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), working with local scientists on the effects of climate change on fluxes of water, energy, and nutrients across watersheds of the Andes Mountains. Carolina Asia Center Facilitates Training for the 97th Civil Affairs Battalion from Fort Bragg

In February 2022, three teams from the 97th Civil Affairs Battalion at Fort Bragg came to Chapel Hill for cultural immersion experiences in advance of deployment to Asia. UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carolina Asia Center (CAC) set up these meetings, in which soldiers met with diaspora communities and academics to provide relevant cultural knowledge and build familiarity with the contexts in which they would be deployed. Across Continents, Florence Babb Collaborates to Enhance Course Instruction

When Florence Babb, professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, heard about Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), she jumped at the opportunity to enhance her Introduction to Latin American Studies (LTAM 101) class and ultimately took her work to Ecuador, where she’s been collaborating with Universidad San Francisco de Quito faculty and students.   Babb applied for a Curriculum Development Award for COIL through the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs in fall 2021. Climate Letters: A Bilingual Multimedia Initiative

Students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain have produced a multimedia site called “Climate Letters.” The site chronicles the impacts of climate change on both North Carolina and the Navarra region in northern Spain. OVPGA Appoints New Director of Global Partnerships

OVPGA Welcomes New Associate Director of Global Education

The Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs (OVPGA) has appointed Sharmila Udyavar as associate director of global education. Udyavar previously served as interim director for international programs at Fayetteville State University (FSU).  As associate director, Udyavar will expand global learning opportunities for UNC-Chapel Hill students through on-campus curriculum. Partnering with and supporting UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, Udyavar will be a resource for developing globally oriented undergraduate and graduate courses or modules, often in partnership with faculty at global partner universities. Udyavar’s portfolio will include Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and the Diplomacy Initiative.   Throughout her career, Udyavar has created new global education opportunities for students and faculty, and she has obtained numerous awards and grants to support international programs … Read more


High School Language Learners Create Projects on Health, Education and Climate at UNC-Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted a virtual awards ceremony to celebrate teams from the seventh annual Learning Through Languages High School Research Symposium on Dec. 8. This year, world language students from 12 high schools conducted and presented research in their language of study on topics related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.   Thirty-one teams were assigned a world region to research and then prepared summative briefings in their languages of study on one of the following topics: good health and well-being, quality education and climate action. In addition to the briefing, students prepared a digital project visual to showcase their findings. Eligible students included high-level Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish language learners, including heritage speakers. Projects were then judged and scored by Carolina … Read more


Conference Builds Capacity for Arabic Language Teaching in North Carolina

Arabic greetings of marhaba (hello), sabah al kheir (good morning), and ahlan wa sahlan (welcome) were shared as attendees gathered for the inaugural conference of the emerging North Carolina Arabic Teacher Council (NCATC), November 13-14, 2021. “Come Together: The Future of Arabic Language in North Carolina” was held at UNC-Chapel Hill and convened over 30 educators and administrators from K-16 institutions across North Carolina. Former ambassador to Poland (Warsaw) Stephen Mull visited the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from Oct. 12-13 as part of the new Diplomacy Initiative launched by the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs (OVPGA). Mull met with students, taught a class and gave a talk on Poland’s political journey from communism to democracy, to a more challenged and less liberal version of democracy today.
