Japanese Ambassador Discusses Strengthening US-Japan Alliance

Koji Tomita, Japanese ambassador to the United States, affirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance and said that the U.S. and Japan should continue to strengthen political dialogues, economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges in an Oct. 6 virtual discussion about the countries’ alliance. The livestream event was part of “Diplomatic Discussions,” a dialogue series featuring career diplomats and national security experts organized by the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs as part of its Diplomacy Initiative. 2021 AAD Sisco Memorial Forum: The Role of Diplomacy in Addressing Climate and Water Issues

Six UNC-Chapel Hill Graduate Students Awarded Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships

Six doctoral students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were awarded grants under the 2021 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellows Program (DDRA). Carolina consistently ranks among the top producers of Fulbright-Hays DDRA fellows.  UNC-Chapel Hill was awarded $210,398 in funding for the program by the U.S. Department of Education. These fellowships allow doctoral students to pursue dissertation research abroad in foreign language and area studies for six to 12 months. UNC-Chapel Hill Ranks 52nd in 2022 ‘Times Higher Education’ World University Rankings

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks 52nd among the world’s top 1,600 research universities, according to the London-based ‘Times Higher Education’ World University Rankings.  The 2022 ranking, released Sept. 1, is based on 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture a full range of university activities. Indicators cover teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.  Among U.S. universities, UNC-Chapel Hill placed 22nd overall and 9th among public universities. UNC-Chapel Hill Ranks 29th in 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities

UNC Library Publishes Report on UNC COVID-19 Research and Collaboration

Over the past year, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has contributed extensive research discoveries associated with COVID-19. To increase the visibility and illustrate the extensive organizational collaborations that help move UNC-Chapel Hill research forward, a team from the UNC Health Sciences Library analyzed the COVID-19 research output of Carolina researchers. The team sought to answer the following questions through their analysis:  What is UNC-Chapel Hill’s research output related to COVID-19 and in which journals are UNC-Chapel Hill researchers publishing?  Which individuals within the University have been involved in published research efforts?  How are schools within UNC-Chapel Hill collaborating on COVID-19 research efforts?  With which institutions, organizations and countries are UNC-Chapel Hill researchers collaborating?  What are the various areas of focus being investigated … Read more


UNC-Chapel Hill’s Russian Flagship Program Caps Off Successful First Year

The Russian Flagship Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently completed a successful first year. Launched in April 2020, the federally funded language initiative is the first of its kind in North Carolina and one of only eight Russian Flagship Programs in the United States. On the eve of graduation, a two-time recipient of the Carolina Family Scholarship for children of University employees reflects on her time at Carolina and abroad. As someone who likes to dive headfirst into new situations, Jenny Suwanmanee was primed for the challenge.
