UNC-Chapel Hill Announces New Partnership with American Academy of Diplomacy

The American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD) and UNC-Chapel Hill are collaborating on the production of The General and the Ambassador, a well-recognized podcast series that focuses on how senior U.S. military leaders partner with senior U.S. ambassadors on national security challenges overseas. Carolina Students Connect with Vietnamese Language, Culture in New Program

A second-generation Vietnamese American, junior Valerie Nguyen feels more connected to her roots than ever after a semester in Carolina’s new Vietnamese language pilot program. Nguyen’s parents immigrated to the United States as refugees from the Vietnam War, and Nguyen grew up speaking mostly English, slowly losing her connection to her family’s first language. Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies Celebrates 60th Anniversary

Experts from across the world participated in the 60th annual Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies via videoconference from January 15 –17, 2021.  Co-hosted by the Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies, Carolina Asia Center (CAC) and Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the conference consisted of 43 panels featuring 137 speakers from 13 countries, including 12 faculty members and 3 students from Carolina and several Triangle-area panelists. Nearly 300 participants attended the conference.  Programming began with a plenary session that included welcoming remarks from hosts Ji-Yeon Jo, director of the Carolina Asia Center, and Morgan Pitelka, chair of the Department of Asian and Middle … Read more

UNC Ranks 18th Among US Universities for Study Abroad in 2020 ‘Open Doors’ Report

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks 18th for the number of students earning credit for study abroad in the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) 2020 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, which presents comprehensive data on international students and scholars at U.S higher education institutions, as well as data on U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit. This ranking reflects credit-bearing activity in 2018-2019 conducted by students from all schools across UNC-Chapel Hill, including short-term study abroad programs and medical and pharmaceutical rotations pursued abroad.  The Open Doors top-25 list is based on institutions with the highest total number of students who have participated in international activity for academic credit, including undergraduate and graduate students. Every year since 2015, three of the world’s leading schools of pharmacy have come together for an annual meeting of the minds to partner for better healthcare worldwide. Undergraduate researchers Chloe Schneider, Maribel Herrera and Megan Raisle, under the leadership of UNC-Chapel Hill geographer Diego Riveros-Iregui, spent two months in Ecuador’s northern Andes Mountains exploring climate change. They came back to Chapel Hill, wrote a paper that was published in a major journal and communicated their research to broad audiences. Conducted fieldwork in the sciences. Royster Society of Fellows Launch Podcast to Connect Doctoral Students

The Royster Global initiative at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill launched a new podcast series, PhD and Me: The Third Degree, in early September. The initiative was created by the Royster Society of Fellows, an interdisciplinary fellowship program within The Graduate School.
